Richard Ernst Galvan II and Sarah Ann Glover

Richard Ernst Galvan II was the third child born to Richard and Catherine Galvan. He was born in NYC on 22nd September 1857 and passed away on the 24th April 1935. His wife Sarah Ann Glover was born in Cambridge in 1868 and passed away on the 22nd November 1918 during the Spanish Influenza. Both are buried at the Raglan Lawn Cemetery.

OBITUARY. 27th April 1935

OLD RAGLAN SETTLER. WELL-KNOWN WATERMAN. One of Raglan’s earliest settlers, who had the reputation of having saved eight lives from drowning in Raglan Harbour at various times, passed away at his home on Wednesday in the person of Mr Richard Ernest Galvan, aged 79 years. The late Mr Galvan had spent practically his entire life at Raglan. Born in the United States, he came to New Zealand with his parents as a boy of five and then settled at Raglan. He married Miss Sarah Ann Glover, daughter of another early settler of Raglan. She died during the influenza epidemic in 1918. Most of his life Mr Galvan hired boats and launches to fishermen and tourists on the Raglan Harbour and he was a best known figure of the place for many years before his health failed. He was a first-class swimmer and was instrumental in preventing many boating tragedies. Of a jovial disposition, Mr Galvan until the last retained a lively interest in the affairs of Raglan and its harbour, though he never sought office on public bodies. He is survived by five children, Mrs McCallurn (Rotorua), Misses M. Galvan and O. Galvan (Auckland), A. Galvan (Raglan), and Mr G. E. Galvan (Raglan). His two brothers, Messrs. Michael and David Galvan of Te Mata, and sister, Mrs Grey, of Auckland, also survive him. The funeral took place at the Raglan cemetery yesterday afternoon.

Their children

Together, Richard and Sarah had seven children. Katherine 1893-1947, Richard Ernst III 1895-1919, Alfred Lawrence 1897-1918, George (Eddie) Edward 1898-1959, Agnes 1900-1971, Mabel Constance 1902-1977 and Louisa Olive 1904-1975.

Richard Ernst III was born 12th September 1895 in Raglan. He was found dead aged just 23 years of age on Raglan beach. Sadly young Richard had experienced fits all of life and it appears this is how he passed so young.

Alfred Lawrence Galvan was born on the 19th July 1897 in Raglan. He passed away on 14th November 1918 aged 22 at Trentham Military Camp of Pneumonia. He is buried at Karori Cemetery in Wellington. "Alfie" worked in his fathers blacksmith shop when he was growing up and also operated the launch Harmony while living in Raglan.

Mabel Constance Galvan was born on 10th December 1902 and passed away on 2nd February 1977. She is buried at Waikaraka Cemetery. She married John Edward King in 1935.

Louisa Olive Galvan was born on 3rd August 1904 and passed away in 1979.

I would appreciate any further information on the lives of Richard and Sarah and their offspring.
